An ongoing timeline of our collective undertakings


30.04.2020 A month of acting together! A summary flyer marking the one month anniversary of the Seaboard CAN. 29.04.2020 Since its launching on the 22nd of April 2020 the Sea Point soup kitchen at the Congressional Church on Marais Road, in partnership with Ladles of Love, has been serving an average 70 meals every day. The initiative has also been distributing hygiene products, masks, clothes and blankets. 30.04.2020 This week’s food delivery to the Helen Bowden Nurses Home / AKH as part of our ongoing in-house soup kitchen partnership occurring three times a week during the lock-down. Groceries included 50kg rice, 50kg lentils, 15kg soya mince, 50kg maize meal, 10kg milk powder and 2kg akni spice. 30.04.2020 In celebration of International Jazz Day we are sharing this save-the-date for the next Artists CAN Collab performance with jazz pianist Thembelihle Dunjana. As with previous concerts, 90% of sales go directly to the artist and 10% to our Gugulethu-Seaboard Partnership. 29.04.2020 The contents of three supermarket trolleys as well as clothes were delivered to the eight families whose homes that were destroyed by a fire in Gugulethu. 25.04.2020 Through ongoing fundraising efforts, 180 more household vouchers were distributed by Gugulethu Street Champions today (this marks 360 in total). The voucher is made up of a R400 supermarket gift card and a R100 fresh produce parcel from local street-traders. This delivery marks 18% progress in our target to raise R 1.1 million to support 2000 vulnerable households in Gugulethu. 25.04.2020 Thanks to Colleen Zulich, 80 Pick ‘n Pay food parcels were delivered to vulnerable Gugulethu households through the Gugulethu CAN partnership. 25.04.2020 Thanks to the bottle donation from Polyoak Packaging and the 50litres of soap from Colleen Zulich, 2000 soapy bottles are being distributed by the Gugulethu CAN. 25.04.2020 Thanks to Chantal Vigus from Teach the Future South Africa, for the donation of 76 packs of dried foods (one pot meals) in support of the Gugulethu-Seaboard CAN partnership. 25.04.2020 Tefo Mahola’s performance from his home in Gugulethu was another Artists CAN Collab success! 76 tickets were sold, of which 90% of the sales went to the artist and R2,309 went to the Gugulethu-Seaboard partnership. 24.04.2020 Thanks to Katharina Freya, a partnership between all Woolworths stores and CAN’s in Cape Town has been initiated. This includes 5 in the Seaboard area; Woolworths Da Luz, Woolworths Piazza St John, Woolworths Ford/Main Road, Woolworths Green Point as well as individual partnerships at Dis-Chem at The Point and the Sea Point PnP. 22.04.2020 Tefo ‘Talking Drum’ Mahola in collaboration with Jazz in the Native Yards and Alliance Française will be performing this Friday, 20:30-21:00, followed by a 20 min 'meet-the-artist' Zoom chat. Tickets available via Quicket @R80.00. 10% of the proceeds be donated to our Gugulethu-Seaboard CAN partnership. 23.04.2020 Thank you to Heidi Segal for the donation of 227 literacy and maths textbook’s for junior students and grades 7 - 12. Education packs have been distributed by our Gugulethu CAN partnership. Find out more about the EduPack Drive here. 18.04.2020 Artists CAN Collab has partnered with textile artists Lizette Chirrime. Take a look at her artworks on offer via our online gallery space or Facebook page. 17.04.2020 This week the Ladles Atlantic COVID group and surrounding neighbourhoods contributed a total of 15 620 sandwiches and 4780 boiled eggs as well as non perishables, toiletries and baked goods. Meals were safely collected by Ladles of Love and distributed by Where Rainbows Meet. 17.04.2020 This week supplies of 7 Sea Point supermarket donation trolley’s, from P’np, Checkers and Woolworths were distributed to the two COVID 19 soup kitchens in Gugulethu. Thanks again to Laughton’s Hardware for sponsoring the refilling of 3 x 9kg gas canisters for AKH and Gogo’s Kitchen. 16.04.2020 Through incredible fundraising efforts, the Seaboard-Gugulethu CAN partnership issued 180 vulnerable households with a R400.00 supermarket voucher and a R100.00 fresh produce voucher linked to local fruit and vegetable traders - an important way of supporting the local Gugulethu economy. In addition, 22 supermarket vouchers were given to the Gugulethu CAN Street Champions who work tirelessly on the frontlines to map, care, inform and distribute within their community - and without whom non of the partnerships precautionary efforts would be possible. 15.04.2020 The launch of the Gugulethu-Seaboard Campaign flyer! Our aim is to support 2000 vulnerable households by raising R 1.1 million. Please get in contact for fundraising material and letter templates. 15.04.2020 Mapumba’s live YouTube concert kicked off our campaign to support local artists whilst fundraising for the Seaboard-Gugulethu CAN partnership. Performing from his home in Sea Point, Mapumba (aka Brother M) brought together 51 households in lock-down from around the world- from Muizenberg to New Jersey, from Marina Da Gama to Dallas, and from Johannesburg to The Hague - raising a total of R3,542 for the CAN partnership. Special thanks to Tana for pulling this altogether and Tayo for designing event posters. 15.04.2020 Since the eve of lockdown Mzolisi has criss-crossed the city sourcing and distributing essential supplies between CAN’s with an essential services pass whilst following COVID 19 protocol. In just 20 days Mzolisi has undertaken more than 1000km’s to connect us all, with wages covered by CAN fundraising. 15.04.2020 Donated food supplies, water containers, adult and baby clothes as well as toys by various CANS were collected and delivered to Empolweni residents by Mzolisi. 12.04.2020 Special thanks to Chez for the large donation of sanitary pads which went to the Gugulethu CAN and residents from Empolweni. Over the Easter Weekend the homes of dozens of Empolweni residents were unlawfully demolished by local Law Enforcement. 12.04.2020 Since the 3rd of April, the 20 street champions who volunteer in the Gugulethu CAN have been tirelessly mapping their greater neighbourhood to identify vulnerable households and local traders with whom to establish food voucher partnerships with. Street champions have been collaborating with local street committees and the ward councillor to varify households and ensure no one is overlooked. So far 2000 residents have been identified. The mapping process simultaneously establishes the CAN’s distribution framework, as volunteers build area specific relationships.

During the lock-down Pamela’s mother joined the Gugulethu CAN solidarity efforts. Supported by 4 volunteers and drawing upon her experience as a caterer, Gogo started running a daily soup-kitchen from her home. Every day at 12:30pm over a hundred people are served a hot meal. Gogo does not turn anyone way, if the food runs out she makes another batch and tells guests to return at 2pm. Soup kitchen food supplies are supported by Cedric, Mark and Cheryl as well as the Seaboard CAN’s supermarket trolley donations.


12.04.2020 The launch of the Seaboard CAN’s cultural fundraising drive whilst supporting local artists. Our first artist collab is with Mapumba aka Brother M who will be performing live from his home in Sea Point. Join us for an hour of uplifting music this Wednesday night, April 15, 8:30-9:30pm! @ R120 (£5.5 /$6.50/€6) per household, tickets available via Quicket. Get to know his unique blend of African folk, soul, reggae on Bandcamp, Spotify and Apple Music. 10% of the ticket sales will be donated to the Gugulethu-Seaboard Community Action Network Partnership. 11.04.2020 A glimpse from our ongoing drive to repurpose plastic bottles for hand-sanitation to share with partners. Many thanks to Heleen for the recent set! Soapy bottles are made by filling 2 litre bottles (or smaller) with liquid soap and water (1:10 ratio). Then seal bottles with a squeezy cap or a screw on cap pierced with a small hole. Remember to squeeze soapy water on your hands and wipe the bottles - dry without rinsing. Repeat upon collection and before usage. 11.04.2020 The opening of Gugulethu’s second COVID 10 lock-down soup kitchen by Thulani’s, restaurant owner of Orgasmic Gawulo. Together with the help of his mother and supplies provided by the Gugulethu CAN, over a hundred hot-meals are served daily. 11.04.2020 Many thanks to Kevin and Wessel from Paradigm Shift Special Effects for donating over 220 litres of water which has been distributed by the Gugulethu CAN. 10.04.2020 Through community mapping Gugulethu Street Champions identified a number of isolated elderly residents, who are now receiving care, assisting with home-up keep, supplementary food supplies, clothes donations and blankets thanks for the volunteers. Thanks to Janey Ball for sourcing the mattress donation and bedding. 09.04.2020 This week the Atlantic Ladles of Covid Group contributed toward a total of 7340 sandwiches, 1488 boiled eggs as well as 1900 easter eggs and 100 cupcakes for the festive weekend ahead. Meals were safely collected by Ladles of Love and distributed by Where Rainbows Meet. 09.04.2020 The visor-making group constructed a total of 70 face shields for the Red Cross Children’s Hospital and 30 for the Helderberg Hospice. Special thanks to fellow Seaboard resident Trevor Laughton who last weekend opened his hardware store Laughtons to donate 10 rolls of foam tape. 07.04.2020 The Atlantic Ladles Covid Group together with the Gardens CAN made a total of 2500 sandwiches and 590 boiled eggs this Tuesday, other donations included non-perishables, clothing and hygiene products. 05.04.2020 Meal time moments at AKH, prepared by Thozama and other devoted volunteers, who cooked for 300 fellow residents as part of the ongoing supplementary food security partnership at AKH during the lock-down. None of these efforts would be possible without the care and generosity of resident AKH volunteers. 05.04.2020 The Atlantic Ladles of COVID group helped prepare 1400 sandwiches and 250 boiled eggs. As the city’s homeless communities are moved to Strandfontein, the demand for meals is forecast to increase from 1500 - 2000 to over 3000 per day. 05.04.2020 Our first Seaboard CAN supermarket donation trolley, launched at Woolworths in Piazza St. John in Sea Point, filled within 24 hours! It marks the beginning of more donation trolleys stationed at the entrances of local Seaboard supermarkets - keep an eye out for the Cape Town Together messaging and suggestions of useful donations. All goods will be safely redistributed amongst our partnerships. 03.04.2020 Additional hand-sanitation essentials delivered to Gugulethu CAN, thanks to Sparkle Cleaning Products who donated 50 litres of dishwashing liquid and Help Up Today who provided 9 x 25 litre waterbags. 2.04.2020 Forty-five members from the Ladles Atlantic Covid sub-group contributed toward a total of 1600 sandwiches, over 100 lites of soup and 250 boiled eggs. Meals were distributed amongst homeless communities by Ladles of Love and Where Rainbow Meets. 1.04.2020 The delivery of water and canisters to the Gugulethu CAN, including 600 litres kindly sponsored by Deon Smit from Water Warriors. Supplies are distributed by Pamela and her team. 02.04.2020 The making and delivery of visors for nurses at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital, pictured here is the delightful head nurse Sister Zanie. So far 40 have been made using acetate, elastic and sealing foam following the design of a medically approved model supplied by a paediatrician. 1.04.2020 Additional deliveries and behind the scenes meal preparation by devoted AKH volunteers cooking for hundreds of residents as part of an ongoing supplementary food plan partnership during the national lockdown. 31.03.2020 The publishing of a lauded Maverick article by our partner Pamela Silwana, community leader of the Gugulethu CAN. Pamela’s words have given incredible strength to not just our collaboration, but the overall Cape Town Together movement - inspiring many other CAN’s to partner up. She garnered invaluable local and international awareness on COVID-19 related challenges in Cape Town and catalysed vital donor support. 31.03.2020 The initiation of the Ladles of Atlantic COVID sub-group, comprised of volunteers who make sandwiches and soups from home (according to COVID 19 protocols) that is collected and safely distributed to the hungry via organised shelters. On their first day over 600 sandwiches, 20 litres of soup and countless eggs were collected from Seaboard CAN and Gardens CAN members. 31.03.2020 The evolution of the Sea Point CAN into the Seaboard CAN to include residents from Mouille Point, Green Point, Camps Bay, Clifton, Bantry Bay and Bakhoven. 30.03.2020 Delivery of 90 litres of water, 17 headscarves and food supplies to the Gugulethu CAN through the support of the Tokai CAN. 28.03.2020 First food delivery to AKH as part of the ongoing supplementary food security plan during the national lockdown. Mzolisi sourced and transferred ingredients while Thozama, a nurse living at AKH, cooked and distributed food to residents. 27.03.2020 A partnered distribution of food supplies, toiletries and kids materials at AKH, including art and craft materials, books, toys and games. More here. 27.03.2020 Our inter-neighhourhood partnership with the Gugulethu CAN unfolded with the distribution of 75 litres of dishwashing liquid soap, 20 x 25 litre water bags, various other water containers, gloves and 800 multi-lingual educational pamphlets. More here. 24.03.2020A partnered distribution of preventative essentials at AHK, including 500 x 500ml squeezy soap bottles kindly sponsored by Polyoak Packaging, 50 x 25 litre communal handwashing stations kindly sponsored by Help Up, 20 litres of soap, 100 pairs of gloves, 500 multi-lingual educational pamphlets in part sponsored by Postnet Seapoint and posters.
